Publishing Fields are used to automatically insert data into a HTML document at the time of publishing. This data can be inserted:
automatically by HotDog (for example, HotDog could automatically insert the current date each time you publish),
by the user of the document (for example, the user could be prompted to enter a name that will be inserted into the document),
or from a file (for example, HotDog could read a price in a textfile that is regularly updated).
Commonly, Publishing Fields are used in two ways:
As part of a template that you create. The information is then inserted (that is, published) as soon as a user opens this HTML document template.
For inserting current information into your webpage as soon as you upload (such as the date and time).
On the Insert menu, select Publish Field. This starts the Add Publish Field Wizard.
Select when you want the publishing to take place (i.e. when you want data to be inserted into your document):
This option is usually used for templates. (Read the tutorial about using Publish Fields in Templates.) If you choose By The User in Step 4 below, this would mean that each time you opened your template with the publishing fields in it, HotDog would prompt you to enter in some details.
This option is used when you go to upload your document. That is, when you upload your document you will be prompted to enter some information (such as the date).
Click Next.
Select how the publishing information will be entered:
By choosing this option, HotDog will prompt you to enter the data prior to publishing. (If you chose the first option in Step 2. above, then you will be prompted when you open your template document. If you chose the first option in Step 2. above, then you will be prompted when you upload your webpage document.)
By choosing this option, HotDog automatically inserts the data upon publishing.
By choosing this option, the information will be read from a file and inserted into your document upon publishing.
Click Finish to insert the publishing field into your document.
